What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a type of Traditional Chinese medicine that is used as an integrative approach to both human and veterinary medicine. When performing acupuncture, very small needles are placed into specific points (“acupoints”) on the body. These needles are very small, with some only being slightly larger than human hair. This produces a physiologic and energetic response along special pathways (“meridians”). These meridians are interconnected energetic pathways that spread Qi (vital life force or energy) to the entire body. The goal of acupuncture and needle placement is to restore normal Qi flow throughout the body by initiating the body’s natural response to the “micro-trauma” of the needle insertion.
Different Types of Acupuncture Techniques
- Dry Needling: The insertion of plain needles into acupoints as described above. This is not the only form of acupuncture that can be utilized with our patients.
- Aqua-Acupuncture: The subcutaneous injection of a small amount of Vitamin B-12, blood from the patient, or sterile saline into acupuncture points to produce a longer lasting effect than dry needles alone. This option can also be utilized in patients that are less likely to sit or will not tolerate sitting still for the full 15-to-30-minute treatment course.
- Electro-Acupuncture: The addition of electric frequency to the dry needles to elicit a stronger reaction than the dry needles alone. This type of acupuncture is especially helpful in patients with back and nerve injuries.
- Moxibustion: The burning of a Chinese herb (Moxa) at acupuncture points either with or without dry needles. It is typically reserved for patients that are critically ill or those that will not tolerate any needles or injections. Due to its pungent nature, it is not a technique typically offered here at Island Exotic Veterinary Care.
When is Acupuncture an Appropriate Treatment Option for My Pet?
Acupuncture can be utilized as a primary or adjunctive treatment for a myriad of pathologies, from pain management to systemic diseases. It can be used for both chronic and acute disorders and is typically combined with Chinese herbs and appropriate nutritional balance to elicit the greatest results. The additional treatment options will be discussed in depth at your integrative medicine appointment.
